En este libro se considera la práctica del ejercicio físico, regular y controlado, como un instrumento terapéutico de primer orden. El lector encontrará la respuesta adecuada a muchas cuestiones que son habituales a la hora de recomendar a los pacientes una determinada actividad física. Se presenta la valoración funcional y cardiológico previa al entrenamiento físico –los protocolos más adecuados en función del tipo de población estudiada y de los parámetros más utilizados-, se brinda las orientaciones básicas para la elaboración de programas de ejercicios en el ámbito no competitivo, se clasifica las actividades físicas y los deportes más comunes según su repercusión cardiovascular y, desde el punto de vista osteoarticular, en disciplinas de alto o bajo impacto. Luego, se trata en detalle la prescripción de ejercicio físico en pacientes con cardiopatía coronária, con enfermedad respiratoria crónica, con lesiones traumatológicas, con trastornos del metabolismo minero-cálcico, con diabetes, dislipemia y obesidad. Asimismo, se estudia en detalle la práctica de ejercicio físico durante el embarazo y la prescripción del mismo en la población adulta y en los ancianos.
